Frequently Asked Questions

What age can my child start?

Our Preschool program begins at age 3, but we accept age 2 if the child will be turning 3 on or before December 1 of the given school year.

Does my child have to be potty-trained?

Yes - children must come with a foundation of toilet training, but we expect accidents and will meet them where they are as long as they have the basic principle. We welcome “pull-ups”/disposable underwear for naps.

Do you offer part-time preschool?

Yes - we have options for 2 days per week (Tuesday, Thursday) or 3 days per week (Mon, Wed, Fri). However, we do not offer a partial day schedule.

How do I enroll in UPK?

The UPK registration process is through the Onteora Central School District website. Registration generally begins at the start of January, culminating in a lottery in May.

What if I’m given a UPK slot but I need to drop off my child earlier than 8:50/pick up my child later than 3?

We offer Wrap Care for our UPK students with morning (8-9) and afternoon (3-5) enrollment options. Once we receive our roster, we’ll reach out to all families with information and enrollment materials - including a registration form for Wrap Care. Be sure to submit yours as soon as possible, as we do strictly follow staff-student ratio and capacity regulations.

Is First Steps a religious program?

No - while we are delighted to lease our space in the Overlook United Methodist Church and have the wonderfully dedicated and compassionate Pastor Ralph serving on our Board of Directors, we are a completely separate, secular entity.

Is there any financial assistance available?

We encourage any families under financial strain to check their eligibility for NY’s Childcare Assistance Program https://ocfs.ny.gov/programs/childcare/ccap/
